Unclog Toilet Using Household Items

There are no secrets to hide the fact that we hold a strong stance against a number of the drain cleaners and chemicals on the market today.   For the most part, they are unsafe for you, your family and your sewer system, often causing corrosion and erosion within your plumbing.

The fact is, you just don't need to be messing around with nasty chemicals when there are many more great tools at your disposal.  Let's take dish soap for instance.

Any standard variety of dish soap can work very well at helping eradicate a clogged toilet.  Mix a good amount of dish soap in a bucket of hot water and pour it into your toilet bowl, let it set for a few minutes and then plunge the clog away.  The dish soap acts as a lubricant to grease the clog and allow it to slide out of the way.

Another great way to defeat a tough clog is with a combination of baking soda and vinegar.  When mixed, the two cause a foaming reaction that has enough power to push its way through even some of the toughest clogs your toilet may face.  Pour the two into the toilet bowl and flush once they are no longer foaming.   This method works best on slow drains as a result of a clog, you may need to plunge first to allow the water to pass even slightly.

Unclog Toilet with a Make-shift Auger

While a drain snake or auger only costs around twenty dollars at your local home improvement center, we realize that some of you may not own one.  There are some alternatives that can get the job done in a pinch.

1. Check your garage or workshop for any length of solid copper electrical wire.  The wire is durable enough that you can use it to push a clog out of the way.

2.  A garden hose.  Believe it or not, we have seen a garden hose used as a successful method for clearing a toilet drain.

Think of anything else that you can find that is at least five feet in length and flexible enough to follow the drain, yet strong enough to prevent itself from bending under pressure.  Make sure to check out our page on toilet augers and drain snakes for more information.

You may enjoy these random highlights from advice and information found right here on the My Clogged Toilet website.

Make sure that you do your research and you will be able to avoid having to pay a plumber to work on your toilet.

When you are plunging your toilet you should make sure that you use a lot of force so that the suction created might be enough to unclog the toilet.

You want to make sure that there is no tubing that interferes with the fill valve, and if you thing that the tube may be a little too long you may have to cut some off.

It is easier and will save you a lot of frustration to repair the problem instead of putting it off.
