Melrose asked: Hello! My toilet clogs over every little thing. It will clog and I can leave it there and eventually it will work itself out and be fine. It just keeps clogging. If you could please give my advise on what to do that would be amazing!!

Thanks for your time!

We responded with: Your problems are pretty common and there are a couple of different problems that may be causing a clogged toilet like this, (the industry term often used for this is a slow flushing toilet). I have gone ahead and laid out a couple potential problems and their solutions below.

1.  The toilet may actually have a clog in it.  It is quite common to find that a previous clog may be causing more clogs down the road.  Most home owners go straight for the plunger when their toilet is clogged, which in many cases works just fine. However, in some instances the plunger will actually cause you to push the clog further down the drain, freeing the flow of water somewhat, but still causing waste to get hung up as it attempts to pass. The solution can often be had for under $20.  You can pick-up a toilet auger from your local hardware store, Home Depot / Lowes and use that in the drain to try and break up any blockage that may be lurking down there.

2.  A Calcium build-up.  In many cases where a home has what we call "hard water" we find that over time calcium can be deposited in the toilet drain and act similar to blockage explained above.  Usually, you can determine whether this your problem or not by lifting the lid off of your toilet tank and checking for any white build-up or residue on the inside of the tank. Should you find any of this residue inside the tank, it is very possible that there may also be calcium building up in the toilets drain as well.  Unfortunately, this usually means that you will need to replace the toilet as the calcium is often very difficult if not impossible to remove. However, you might still find some relief by using the toilet auger(as mentioned above), as it may break away some of the calcium and open up the drain again.

Hopefully this has helped and at least given you a place to start.  Please feel free to reply to this email if you have any further questions, we are happy to help.
