Clogged Toilet

Dealing with a clogged toilet can be very troublesome for a number of reasons, but mostly because there are just so many potential reasons for the clog in the first place. In my experience as a plumber I have seen toilets clogged with everything from rubber alligators, to wallets and one where a child had flushed a banana down the toilet. Regardless of the reason for your clog, it has to be fixed and below is some information to get you started. You might also want to read our page on how to unclog a toilet to get you started with some tips.

First Things First - Identify the Clog if Possible

I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have been called out on a toilet repair job to repair a clogged toilet, only to find that the toilet is not actually clogged as a result of an item or waste. Over time, calcium deposits can form in a toilet. As these deposits grow larger, they begin to restrict the flow of water and waste and as a result, the water drains down slow. In some cases, the water appears to almost not drain out of the bowl at all.

There are some home remedies that people use to fight calcium deposits, but if you are at the point where these deposits are causing slow drainage and/or constant back-ups it is best to just replace the toilet all together. You can read our guide on how to replace a toilet if you think this might be the problem that you are having. However, there are many other reasons for a toilet to get clogged and we will cover some of those.

Toilet is Clogged with Human Waste

If your toilet is clogged with human waste, it should be a pretty easy fix. In most cases, your first line of defense is going to be a plunger. Ninety percent of the time, a quick plunge will take care of the problem, but if you are reading this then chances are, the plunger isn't working. One trick that many people, including ourselves, use is to mix up some dish soap and hot water to pour into the toilet bowl.

The combination of soap and hot water helps to break up the clog and get things sliding their way through the drain. You do not want the water to be boiling, as boiling water can crack the porcelain toilet. Try mixing up your solution and pouring it in, allow it to sit for twenty to thirty minutes or so and then give the toilet a flush. Try plunging again and see if you can break it free, if not you may need to turn to using a drain auger or snake. You can learn all about how to use a toilet auger on our site.

Toilet is Clogged with a Foreign Object

This is where situations tend to get a little tricky, including for professionals as well. Foreign objects such as cups, toys, toilet paper rolls and the like can pose a real problem when it comes time to get them out of the drain. Unfortunately, other than extracting the item, there is not much alternative in these cases. In the worse case scenario, you may need to remove the toilet and run a auger through the bottom of the toilet to push the item out through the top. However, before you go that far you can try using any of the following items to remove the blockage:

  • A bent coat hanger
  • A pair of long neck needle nose pliers
  • Your hands

If after trying the above tools, you are still unable to remove the item from the toilet drain, you may need to remove the toilet and try that. You can find plenty of information on this website about removing and reinstalling a toilet in addition to dealing with a clogged toilet, should you need some help.
